Marie Antoinette probably didn't say it

Earliest trace: Jean-Jacques Rousseau, 1765 n3

The earliest dated evidence traces the phrase to Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Confessions (c. 1765) where a 'great princess' says 'Qu'ils mangent de la brioche' n3 n12 n15. No contemporaneous source attributes the remark to Marie-Antoinette; later sources credit her, the earliest being a 2012 blog post n8. Therefore the saying is misattributed to Marie-Antoinette.

The known answerMisattributed to Marie AntoinetteSame verdict as this run

Earliest known: Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Confessions, 1782.

Rousseau credits the line to an unnamed "great princess", so its author is unknown. He wrote the passage in the mid-1760s (sources give 1765 or 1766), when Marie Antoinette was a child who had never been to France. The first six books of Confessions were published in 1782.

What the agents did

Who does what
Run
The run itself: when it started, which sites it left out, and when it stopped.
Planner
Writes the search: other wordings of the quote, who might have said it, and the queries.
Search
Web search through Tavily, which brings back the pages to read.
Reader
Reads one page and copies the quote word for word, with who the page credits, its date and any older work it names.
Checker
Plain code, no model. Checks every copied line against the page text, allowing small differences in wording, and crosses out what it can't find there. It also corrects a verdict's earliest date or page when the pages don't back it.
Genealogist
Picks older works the confirmed pages name and looks for them in digital libraries, for up to two rounds.
Judge
Weighs only the confirmed pages and gives the verdict, which code checks before it stands.
